Learning from my nephew

2014-04-17

My nephew, Andrew, and I have a lot of fun together. I’ve been looking forward to introducing him to tabletop role playing more or less since the day he was born.

Earlier this year I had an opportunity to give him a copy of Fate Accelerated Edition and a set of Fudge dice. We talked about character creation and a little about how a game would be played and the statistics of dice rolling. It would be another month before we wouldd actually get the chance to sit down and try to play a game.

I invited my nephew and his dad over to play a game. We just sat down, and FATE-style started to throw a game together. Watching Andrew work through his ideas was an amazing experience for me. Andrew had started piecing together ideas from lots of different things that he’d been exposed to over the years. There were concepts directly out the FAE book, some from video games he played, and others that I couldn’t identify. He had some very specific ideas that he wanted to see expressed in the game. It was fantastic.

Since that time, I’m very happy to say, that he has been excited about playing more. We’ve had several sessions at this point, and we’re all starting to get the hang of FAE , and Andrew is starting to get the hang of some of the concepts. As should be a surprise to no one, he likes rolling dice, and I feel like I need to do some work so that I can present him with some bigger and better dice rolling opportunities.

I feel so lucky to have such a great guy in my life.
