You must gather your party before venturing forth

How often should gamers get together? Once a week? Twice a month? How much is too little or too much? It can be a tough balance between a regular game and a personal life.

I am currently playing in a Shadowrun game. I think. The problem is that we only meet every other week, and we haven’t actually had a game in two months. There are all kinds of reasons for this, and mostly valid ones (probably). This is why every other week games tend to not work very well for me, if you miss even a single session it’s 4 weeks between games, which really breaks the flow of things.

My personal preference is 3 weeks a month. Not necessarily pre-scheduled or in any specific pattern. Generally everyone can look at their calendars and agree on which week the off-week should be. It gives you some breathing room in an otherwise weekly schedule.

I generally worry anytime we miss a game that we’re just getting blown off, and that the game isn’t important to the player who’s missing that week. I understand and agree that games aren’t especially important, but I do think that being honest about your regular social engagements is important, because otherwise you end up wasting a lot of other people’s time.
